今回は、厚生労働省の模擬通訳演習の
大腸内視鏡検査（検査前説明） の
英訳例をご紹介します。
私が医療通訳の勉強をしていた頃、
対訳が無くて答え合わせが
出来ず困りました。
ということで、あなたの通訳練習の参考に
なればいいなと思い、英訳をアップします。

| 1 | （検査前説明） 大腸内視鏡検査とは、肛門からカメラを 入れて、一番奥の盲腸から肛門までを観 察する検査です。大腸の中に便が残って いると異常な部分を見落としたりして、 正確な検査が受けられません。まず大腸 の中をきれいに洗い流して、腸の中をか らっぽにしてから検査をするため、前日 から下剤を服用してください。 | (Explanation before the examination) A colonoscopy is done by inserting a camera through the anus to observe from the cecum at the far end of the colon to the anus. If stool remains in the colon, abnormal areas can be overlooked, and we will not be able to have an accurate examination. First, in order to flush out and empty your colon, you’ll need to take a laxative from the day before the examination. |

When you have a bowel movement, keep a record of the time and amount of stool. |

At 7:00 a.m., take two tablets of medicine to promote digestion with a glass of water. Be sure you have used the bathroom before coming to the hospital. |

| 7 | 便の状態を見て判断しますが、検査が始 まるのは14 時*ごろになると思います。 先程の薬を飲むと、平均で10回ほど便 が出て、黄色から淡い黄色の便に変化し ます。粒のない、おしっこのような水様 性の便が出るようになれば検査ができま すので、看護師に申し出てください。そ のような便が出たら、腸の中をきれいに 洗い流す水薬を飲みます。 | We will make a decision based on* the color and texture of your stool, but the exam will start around 2:00 p.m.* After taking the medicines mentioned earlier, you will have about 10 bowel movements on average, which will change from yellow to pale yellow. If you start to have watery stools that look like urine without solid pieces, we can start the exam, so please tell the nurse when you see it. If you have such stool, you will need to take a liquid medicine to flush out the bowels. |
| 8 | 検査室に移動したら、血圧を測り、 心電図の装置を付けてから検査を始め ます。まずベッドに左側を下にして横に なり、お尻に麻酔のゼリーをつけてから、 医師が肛門からカメラを入れます。 腸を見やすくするために、カメラの 先から空気や水が出るようになってい ます。空気を入れながら検査をすると、 お腹が張ってくることがあります。 そのときは、恥ずかしがらずにガスを 出して*ください。お腹の張りが楽になり ます。 | Once you are transferred to the examination room, your blood pressure will be measured and an ECG monitor will be attached before the examination begins. First, you will lie on the bed with your left side down. After applying anesthetic jelly to your back passage, the doctor will insert a camera through the anus. To make it easier for the doctor to see the inside of your colon, air and water will be pumped from the tip of the camera. As air is pumped in to the bowel, you may feel bloated. If this happens, please pass gas*. You do not need to feel embarrassed. It helps relieve the tension in the bowel. |
| 9 | また、力を抜くと、カメラが入れやすく なり、痛みも少ないです。検査中、痛み などがあるときは遠慮なくおっしゃって ください。 | Also, when you relax, the camera can go through easily, and it’ll be less painful. During the examination, if you feel any pain, please let us know. |
| 10 | 検査で問題がなければ、検査終了後から 食事ができます。もし、ポリープなどが あり、生検をする場合は、検査中にお伝 えします。生検とは、病変と思われる細 胞の一部を採取し、組織検査を行うこと です。生検をした場合、検査当日はアル コール類や香辛料が効いた食事は禁止で す。また、重労働やおなかに力を入れる 作業、ジョギングはやめてください。 | If no problems are found in the examination, you can start eating right after the examination. If you have polyps or other lesions that need to be sent for biopsy, you will be informed during the examination. A biopsy is performed by taking a sample of tissue that are thought to be a lesion and performing a histological examination. After having a biopsy, you cannot have alcohol or spicy food on the day of the exam. Also, please avoid heavy labor, any type of work that requires abdominal strain, or jogging. |
| 11 | 個人差がありますが、検査を始めてから 30分～1 時間で終わる方、もっと長く かかる方もいます。これがご自宅で前日 から飲んでいただく薬一式ですので持っ て帰ってください。説明書もお渡ししま す。 | Depending on the individual, the examination may take 30 minutes to an hour to complete, but it could take longer. Here is a set of medicine to take at home from the day before the examination, so please take them home with you. We’ll also give you an instruction manual. |

通訳のポイント
- 2* 消化の悪い食べ物で「ゴボウ」が出てきたことがありました。医療英語だけではなく、日頃から「これって英語で何て言うんだろう？」とアンテナを張っておくと良いですね。ちなみに、ゴボウはburdockと言います。
- 7* based onかbased off ofか迷ったので調べたら、どちらでもいいみたいです。ただ、後者の方が新しい表現のようで、人によっては間違った使い方に聞こえるようです。
- 7* 外国人には24時制（military time）より12時制（am・pmの表現）の方が伝わりやすいです。また、最初の部分で「午前」「午後」と日本語で言っていたのに、ここだけ24時制にすると混乱すると思います。
- 8* おならは、fartではなく、丁寧な言い方pass gasにしましょう。
大腸内視鏡検査は、数日前からしっかり
準備をして行う検査で、患者さんの理解と
協力がなければ実施できない検査です。
患者さんが理解できたか、
必ず確認しておきましょう。
大腸内視鏡検査だけに限らず、
通訳の最後には、医師から発言が
なくても通訳者から自発的に
“Do you have any questions?”と
患者さんに必ず確認するように
してくださいね。

まとめ
大腸内視鏡検査とは、先端に高性能の
カメラがついた細いチューブを肛門から
挿入して大腸（結腸）と直腸の変化や
異常を発見するための検査です。
検査の数日前から準備をして
検査を行います。

まず、この検査を受けられるにあたり、一番大事な事が、腸をきれいにする事です。この前処置をしっかりと行わないと、きちんとした検査になりません。腸管洗浄液という薬を飲んでいただき腸の中をきれいにした状態で、検査を行います。
